Origin of a Fox
Sometimes it seems that I am living a second life, I’ve never been able to understand the dreams I have every night, but I swear they are real. I see myself driving with 3 friends, in an over packed car. We must have been going somewhere important, because everyone is excited and wearing strange clothing. I remember looking to the person next to me, laughing as they spoke. The next thing I see are sparks, fire, glass, and flying metal. Time slows to a standstill, the smell of burnt rubber and smoke fills the air. The sound crunching metal and breaking glass rings in my eardrums drowning out the screams that come from elsewhere in the car. The pain from bones being broken, skin being cut and burned and the weight of the car being crushed around us is almost enough to cause me to black out, but it never happens. Instead I see the bearded face of the semi-truck driver that fell asleep at the wheel, launching their vehicle over the divider into my truck, and then there is nothing. I wake up drenched in sweat as I bawl my eyes out, screaming into the darkness that fills my room. Every night I have this dream, every morning I wake up the same way. Drinking would probably solve the problem but honestly, dying every night makes me feel alive.
Last night was no different, at least it started that way. The dream started exactly the same as every other night except I was watching it happen from afar. The crash, the sounds, the smells, even the pain, it was all the same. Except, the driver of the smaller vehicle wasn't me, at least I don’t think it was, but they were super familiar.I could feel the death being caused by this accident, then in a split second it was over. Everything went black, and I felt like I was falling, or maybe floating is a better way to describe it. Sitting there is an empty, infinite void. I couldn't see anything but a single silver beam of energy shimmering above my head. I could feel myself reaching for it and despite my attempt to pull away I grabbed it. The moment I touched it, it was gone. I was alone once more and I couldn't wake myself up. Looking back, it didn't really feel like I was asleep, but that isn’t important. I just remember sitting there wondering how long it would go on, and that's when I could feel a tingling in my hand. Looking down, I was definitely caught by surprise. Where my hand used to be was nothing but the bone underneath. There was no blood, or pain, just white bone as if the skin, veins, muscles etc. were stripped away. Turning the hand over to observe it, I panicked letting out a shrill cry for help, or at least I tried, but i was met with no avail. I looked past my hand to find the energy had returned, and by instinct I pulled after it. I ripped through the air, hoping to grasp something, anything. But, there was nothing to grab. There was no ground to stand on and no walls to push off of, I was stuck. I didn't want to keep reaching for the stream of energy ahead but I couldn’t control myself. I reached it again and when I touched it everything became white. There was no more darkness and the silver beam turned black. The energy latched itself to me and I could feel it winding up my arm and laying over my entire being. A sudden tingling sensation ran through my body as electricity ran through me. My muscles tensed up, my joints felt as though they began to shift, every part of my body felt as though it was changing. My mouth exploded in pain as it filled with blood. I went to spit and in doing so, teeth went with it. I remember looking at my hand in awe as they were no longer hands, of a human at least. My fingernails grew to a point like claws and a grey shade with silver like etchings overshadowed my hands and arms. When the bones in my legs stopped hurting I noticed they were no longer their normal shape. They looked to be bent backwards, and they ended with what seemed to be paws. Putting my hands to my face i found that it was longer than I remembered, and for some reason my nose was much bigger, and darker that normal. The taste of blood had finally left my mouth as well and I had sharp fangs where I was lacking teeth moments before. Then I was falling again, for at least 30 seconds before hitting my head on what seemed like the floor. That's when I noticed the two pointy ears on my head. I had no idea what was going on but the only thing I wanted to do was wake up, and a few seconds later I felt a warm and peaceful feeling growing within my chest. It was such a comfortable feeling that it made me feel as though my life was ending, right there and then. Getting to my feet seemed impossible, I had no clue how to stand and my body felt pinned to the floor. After a while I worked myself to my feet and observing myself I noticed that I was indeed covered in thick, fluffy, black fur. Panic filled my mind as i tried ripping it off me only to find it was most certainly attached. As I pulled and pulled I felt a weight near my lower back. Looking I see a massive tail, swaying back and forth as if it is laughing at me. With a yelp I just started running, running like it was my job. I had no idea where I was going but I figured I had to get somewhere at some point. I was alone, scared and confused and just needed to go.
I was running at a full sprint, but it felt like I was getting nowhere. The void seemed almost infinite so direction and distance are both irrelevant until I slam in what appeared to be a wall knocking myself to the floor. It was so sudden that it knocked the wind out of me and as I took a deep breath my lungs caught on fire from what seemed to be smoke. I opened my eyes and in my face was an airbag. I was back in the car, flames surrounding me, car parts flying everywhere. But, my senses were no longer working. I couldn't feel the heat from the fire, I couldn't smell he burning rubber, and there was no shattered glass or crumpled metal. Looking to my left what is in the seat sends me into a pit of despair. Tears begin streaming down my face seeing the deceased body of my friend, whose name I cannot remember. Looking in the back seat I see the the other two in the same state, both lifeless where they sat with smiling faces just moments before. I became angry with what I saw, punching the car window only to hit air falling over landing hard on the ground, the taste of fresh blood filling my mouth causing discomfort, but I felt no pain.
For what seemed like hours, I just laid there crying, the images from before burning into my memory. I just sat there and wondering why this was happening to me, and how I was going to get out of this prison. I even stopped believing it was a dream any longer, bargaining with whatever thing was responsible for what was going on. A soft thudding sound filled my ears, growing louder and louder over time.. With almost lightning speed I jumped up ready to defend myself when I saw before me a simple pile of clothes. My first instinct was to walk away but my body walked me over to them. There I found a pair of strange pants, and a long coat with a hood but no sleeves. There was also some gear, two similar swords and a round shield , which were surprisingly light. what appeared to be a shield and a long sword that is surprisingly very light. Since I was practically naked I thought it would be smart to wear something. Putting the clothes on, confused, I sat down and tried to think of how I got there and why for that matter. When once again everything went dark, and in that instant I just started screaming. I wanted it to all go away. But, it seemed to only get worse as I began to literally drown in nothing but air. Clawing at my chest trying to grab any oxygen that might be present I see the silver energy again. The only thing I could think of was getting to it, rolling for it as quickly as I could. when I reached the light I immediately started falling until I landed on the ground with a loud thud.
As I got to my feet, I remember hearing a familiar voice calling to me, telling me to get up for the day. I remember looking down at my hands hoping they were normal but was filled with dread as I saw fur. It turned out it wasn’t a dream, or at least it felt like it wasn’t. It was nothing I could, and still cannot explain. All I knew was if this was my current life, then I might as well try and look for answers. Back then there was work to do though, and there still is now. There was talk of war and we were setting things in motion. I had one job to do and no idea how to complete my objective, yet. But, our meeting with the Scholars was coming up and there was change coming. As I grabbed my gear, I realized the room I was in was a cave, and there were bats all over the place. I couldn’t remember how I got there, or when for that matter but at the time it felt like home. I still can’t remember anything before that day, but what I was doing seemed right . Outside of the cave we could see a tower in the distance and I knew that’s where I supposed to go. After that, things went smoothly for the most part, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been in that cave and a lot has happened. Someday you might hear about those stories but for now I’m ending this entry.
